At least thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
